The humane destruction of vermin such as rats and mink
and can be arranged and the breeding of Canada Geese can be kept under
control.
With the widespread release of mink into the wild their
population has increased dramatically, causing untold damage in the countryside.
Mink are responsible for the decline of the water-vole,
they eat bird eggs and chicks and have even been known to kill lambs,
holding no fear of man. They are known to take large fish from the water
and kill them, eating the vital organs and leaving behind the rest of
the carcass, encouraging rats.
Chris Logsdon, MKF manager, said: “Mink breed
like flies. They were illegally released into the wild a few years ago
and have caused absolute havoc. The problem has become much worse since
the mink farms were broken up and they were let loose on the countryside.
The harm this has done is huge.”
Canada Geese are driving out the native greylag
geese in the UK and pose a major problem due to the volume of excrement
they generate, which silts up the base of ponds of lakes and increases
algae. MKF keeps the population size under control by pricking the eggs
in the nesting season.
