Thought i might just get a thread going, but how is everyone doing with the pike season? Anyone had any results so far?
Went down reed lake in the end on Saturday after starting off on lagoon, just to have the one take which came to a lost fish...Does anyone have any idea on the stock of pike in reed lake?
Best of luck for the remainder of the season.... |

| hey dom, i've started but had no joy yet, lost what seemed to be a big fish on the brook, and blanked on handle. loggies tomorro though and from what i'm hearing of accidentally caught pike its crammed with them, and not all jacks either, dads had an 18 whilst rudd fishing about a month ago. and i heard of a twenty on a boilie last week. so looks like it could hold some crackers. plus nook and cranny used to hold loads of twenties so we know the water and strain is good. reed has done some big twenties in the past. but other than that i have no idea. |

| I'm no pike angler but if you are dont forget Blue Lagoon. I saw easily the biggest pike I have ever seen in there about four years ago. I have never caught pike over 12 pounds but this thing must have been getting on for 30(!??) I know there are lots of stories of giant pike but this one is true. |

Hi Dom, Hi All.
I am starting my Pike season on Thursday. Not sure where yet. Blue Lagoon or Loggies probably. Let you know how I get on.

| Westbere has to be the number 1 MKF water for Pike with the amount of 20+ers that have come out in the past. Theres chance of a 30 too. Ive had 6lb+ bream this season butchered at the net by them twice and one that straightened out a treble when I got so pissed off with them ruining my swim I had to catch a few. (Had 7 in 3 hrs and Im no pike angler really!) TBH though theyre not really my bag as they've always struck me as mug fish. Though admittedly there is some water craft involved in tracking down the biguns regularly and making sure your rigs are free running enough for them not too drop it. |

lol oh dear Guy lol.....the British record was caught on a 5lb tench bait. The big girls like a big bait, it would appear that you are being weighed up and traces made as we speak dude heh heh |

Lol Thought that might put the cat amongst the pigeons. Yes big pike are notoriously difficult to catch but that has as much to do with tracking them down and not having baits intercepted by smaller fish as anything else in my opinion.
Its my belief that the predatory instinct in pike and the fact that they are in many cases the apex predator and therefore less wary of danger makes them relatively speaking easier to catch than other coarse species.
I dont suppose many other specimens would be caught on anything as thick visable and rigid as a wire trace unless they were predatory themselves and therefore succeptable to such instict taking over. Even Zander need a scaling down of rigs in order to be caught regularly.
All that said a 20lber is a mighty achievement for the reasons stated and a 30 is practically a miracle on any natural water so fair play to all you pikers.

A specialist Pike angler will tell you that a difference in the suppleness of trace wire will increase takes. I think you would be amazed at how easily a big pike can detect the slightest resistence as well as if the bait has anything attached such as a wire trace. Those using a standard 7 strand wire would see a big increase in takes by swapping to a Titanium type supple wire. Most won't as 7 strand is £3 for 20m where as Titanium is £12 for 5m. But it is these type of things that make the difference. As does using a rear drop off indicator to let the line become free running.
There is soooo much more to successful pike angling than meets the eye.
Personally I would give every carp iv ever caught, in exchange for a gravel pit 30lb pike, a rare fish indeed. |

Pah! and Pah! again two a penny ask Guy lol! A river 30 is where its at Kev Now they are rare. Think in terms of Carp they equate to a 50+ lber according to recent figures. We all know about certain big pike on certain lakes but "BIG PIKE THRIVE ON NEGLECT" so anyone lucky enough to take a big pike by all means have your photo and name the venue if thats what floats your boat but please think carefully about naming the spot. The hordes will descend and the chances are it will go t*ts up.
Finding them is the curse like Kev says. The big girls tend not to move very far at certain times of the year on a pit. They lie up and move out to feed then go back to lie up. One decent fish (5lb +) can last a good sized pike upto 2 weeks between feeds Intercepting them on this route is the key. Finding them and the route they use is the skill and what takes up so much time (unless your very very lucky)
But as always wtf do I know I'm a fecking carp angler face

| I know of two 30+s out of the canal last year, different fish. River/canal I know there's a difference but still good fish!!!! Lads could you do me a favour and keep an eye on the Jack situation we do not want to many in the waters. We have found that if some of the jacks are removed the remainder grow bigger quicker!! |
