Mid Kent Fisheries - Pesticide, Weed Control and Habitat enhancement

FISHERIES advisers at Chilham are at the cutting edge of new technology to control weed, as well as offering conventional management techniques.
Mid Kent Fisheries is licensed to use chemicals to control weed offering knapsack spraying from boats, on foot, or in the water.
Pond weed has to be professionally managed to prevent the water silting up or disappearing and stop de-oxygenation, which can kill fish. Weed is exacerbated by nutrients in the water from excessive numbers of wildfowl on lakes and ponds – for example, one swan or goose can produce 12lb of phosphate in a lake annually, which can generate severe algae.
Environmentally friendly alternatives for clients who avoid the use of chemicals in their lakes and ponds are available and we offer manual removal of weed using hand scythes and weed cutting boats, with motorised cutters underneath the hull, plus the chain cutting technique.
Chain cutters are a series of linked blades, twisted and jointed together in 40-50ft lengths with a chain at each end, strung across the bed of a lake and operated manually in a see-sawing motion with a person at each end. This method has been used at the Bluewater Complex.
