Twenty five anglers in total competed in last season’s closely fought match league on Mid Kent Fisheries Westbere Lake.

Mark Tailby from Chartham won the series with 78 points, only three points ahead of previous season’s winner, Derek Silk (who drive’s from Frome in Somerset to compete) with Paul Russell from Sandwich taking third spot and Mick ‘The Whip’ Horton from Boughton in fourth.

The series comprises of 9 matches, pegged on three different sections of the expansive 180 acre lake. Early matches are fished on the Fordwich spit section, before moving to the deeps at Westbere village end in September and October and then returning to the prolific canal end for the winter months.

Westbere is renown for it’s head of quality silver fish and although the bream shoals did not show in matches last season, roach bags averaged 15 to 20lb with some weights nearly topping 24lb. Thousands of roach and skimmers pack into the canal end during the winter, providing excellent sport for the match angler and rich pickings for the marauding pike.

Many anglers elect to fish the whip and speed fish for roach on maggot or caster, however matches can be won with skimmers on the pole or waggler, fishing sweetcorn over groundbait.

The entry fee is only £5 per match with a 100% payout. Trophies are presented at the AGM and Ashford Tackle have kindly offered to donate a tackle prize to the winner at next years event.
